About the Event
Why Does the Census Matter, and What Can We Do About It?
A joint session of The Nonprofit Council and the San Antonio Funders’ Group
It’s about equity. An accurate census count affects everything from political representation to how the federal budget is distributed. Some community members might be hesitant to respond to the census, even without the citizenship question. Some might not realize that their voice matters.
Census data is also used to determine how more than $675 billion in federal funds are distributed back to states and local communities every year for services and infrastructure, including health care, jobs, schools, roads and businesses.
Businesses use census data to decide where to build factories, offices and stores, and this creates jobs. Developers use the census to build new homes and revitalize old neighborhoods. Local governments use the census for public safety and emergency preparedness. Residents use the census to support community initiatives involving legislation, quality-of-life and consumer advocacy.
How can the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors help “get out the census”? Foundations are considering a pooled fund; nonprofits and community organizers are working on messaging to help reach historically under-sampled groups.
Join The Nonprofit Council and the San Antonio Funders’ Group at this joint session to explore solutions to this thorny problem. A panel discussion will lead into shared conversation about solutions.
